Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht. The sweet side of slavery?

In the descriptions of all different forms of slavery there is a recurrent concession referring to a potential of emotional closeness between owners and their human property.  Beside its obvious ideological function, there may be a truth inherent in such a perspective. It points to the challenges and the discomfort that a life in full agency will always entail. Seen from this angle, the "sweet side of slavery" reveals one of the key foundations of modern dictatorship.
