The concept of fetishism is traditionally linked to “crazy” sex and is commonly regarded as an unhealthy obsession with certain items of clothing or body parts. Valerie Steele, a well-known cultural historian who has written extensively on the history and theory of fashion and a brilliant curator behind many exhibitions dedicated to that subject, centers her study on the relationship between fashion and fetishism. While the first chapter of her book is filled with a polyphony of voices emerging from the various discourses on fetishism, the second one seeks to understand the source of the many similarities between fashion and fetishism and to explain why fashion has become increasingly fetishistic. The following four chapters explore the history and trivia of specific materials and items of clothing that often figure in fetishist sexual practices. In the last and most important chapter Steele draws on psychoanalytical theory, post-structuralism, Marxism and feminist theory to examine the complex interplay of fashion, fetish and fantasy through an exploration of the so-called clothing “looks,” which incorporate a variety of clothing fetishes
