Unlike French or German trends, English influences in late-nineteenth- and early-twentieth- century Russian art have never received much attention from researchers. Yekaterina Vyazova’s book does much to fill this gap.
Uncovering and analysing in detail the ‘traces’ of English culture in St. Petersburg and Moscow, the author builds up an entertaining sequence of mutual interaction, meetings and intertwinings.
Vyazova’s study is not merely a specialised piece of art history research. Looking at the sources of Russian Anglomania, she examines the coming together of cultures, and the proximity of artistic life and aesthetic trends in turn-of-the-century England and Russia.
