The choice of subjects and his bold treatment of the Swedish tradition of psychological realism have made Lars Norén one of the most successful and sough-after stage directors in Western Europe. Norén is the author of more than 60 plays. Just like August Strindberg he opens himself up to the audience revealing an abyss within himself only to point towards a chasm within his viewers. Norén explores the innermost, most private parts of human psyche and soul. His plays are saturated with surreal, absurdist humor, and for many an actor they have served as a challenging crash test, attesting to the mastery of their art, their tenacity and endurance. We have the language of Norén’s plays to thank for that — the language that is infinitely rich, cheerful, erotic, candid, vivacious, and capable of reinventing itself again and again.
