The anthology comprises some of the plays that have already been shown to the Slovak theatre audiences to great acclaim. Most of these plays are contemporary, with the exception of two works by Osvald Zahradník and Ivan Bukovčan, both considered national and world classics, and the two dramatic adaptations of the works by Vincent Sikula and Ladislav Ballek undertaken by Ondrej Šulaj. The anthology is stylistically diverse: some of the plays belong to the classical tradition, others are examples of experimental avant-garde dramaturgy. Chronologically they range from the late 1990s to the 2000s. Most have never been translated into Russian before. The anthology allows a fuller understanding of contemporary Slovak drama and theatre, as well as of the social realities of today’s Slovakia that since the dissolution of Czechoslovakia in 1993 has experienced profound political, economic and cultural changes that have also affected the way people relate to each other and communicate.
